Poor Seattle Wine Society. They just can’t seem to catch a break. Although they wisely moved the May wine society meeting to a much nicer venue - The Herban Feast in SoDo - the meeting didn’t go off without a couple of glitches. I take that back because that’s an understatement. It went off with major glitches. Takes notes Seattle Wine Society!First of all, I’m giving the SWS (Seattle Wine Society) props for moving the monthly meeting out of that frackin’ cave at the Greek Orthodox Church. The room where we usually meet at St. Demetrio’s is big, dark, and ugly, and the entry way where they make you wait until the damn doors open is freezing! Come on, you guys should know by now that we spoiled wine bitches don’t want to wait in the cold to taste wine. Get with the program!
Secondly, the May meeting at The Herban Feast is what is known as a “walk around” meeting. This is a really nice way of getting everyone up and socializing. But why all of the tables and chairs if it was a walk around? This actually impeded everyone from comfortably “walking around.” See my last paragraph about spoiled wine bitches.
Letter C – figure out the sound equipment early so you don’t embarrass yourselves trying to get it to work five minutes before the meeting starts.
Number 4 – SWS, you know what’s coming, don’t you? What the hell was everyone thinking when they made the decision to let The Herban Feast make and serve the food? Did you not ask them how much they were making and how they were going to serve it to a bunch of hungry, spoiled wine bitches? Bringing out enough appetizers on teensy, tiny trays to feed about 10 people, spacing the bringing out of those teensy, tiny trays about 30 minutes apart was a really BAD idea. I felt sorry for the servers that would come out occasionally with a miniscule tray with a few mini crab cakes or stuffed mushrooms, be totally mobbed by the hungry, spoiled wine bitches, and slink back to the kitchen area with the empty tray in hand. Being a spoiled wine bitch, I felt even more sorry for me and my girlfriends. Next time, perhaps a little Q&A beforehand?
Okay, enough smacking around of the SWS. I think you get the picture. On to the wines!
What the SWS did right was invite five wineries from Walla Walla to pour their wines. If you’ve read my recent Walla Walla wine tasting trip posts, you already know that I’m a HUGE fan. As you can imagine, I was in wine tasting heaven at the May SWS meeting.
All of the wines were amazing and delicious and could be purchased at the meeting that night. (Another brilliant move.)
Here’s the list of the wineries that poured their wines and what they poured:
Beresan Winery
1) 2007 Semillon (100%)
2) 2005 Stone River (35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Syrah, 25% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc)
Isenhower Cellars
1) 2008 Snapdragon (Rousanne/Viognier blend)
2) 2008 White Paintbrush (100% Rousanne)
3) 2007 Wild Alfalfa (100% Syrah)
Nicholas Cole
1) 2004 Camille (65% Merlot, 23 % Cabernet Franc, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon)
2) 2006 Dauphine (Red blend, Syrah).
Spring Valley
1) 2006 Uriah (54% Merlot, 33% Cabernet Franc, 7% Petit Verdot, 6% Malbec)
2) 2006 Frederick (54% cabernet sauvignon, 27% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot, 2% Malbec)
Zerba Cellars
1) 2006 Cabernet Franc (77% Cabernet Franc, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon)
2) 2006 Reserve Merlot (75% Reserve Merlot, 25% Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon)
3) 2006 Port (100% Syrah)
There wasn’t a bad wine in the bunch. They were all incredibly delicious. The most surprising wine of the evening, in my spoiled wine bitch opinion, was the Zerba Cellars Port. I’m not a huge fan of ports. I can appreciate them when they’re paired with the correct dessert but just to sit down and drink a port, just for the sake of drinking it, and enjoying it, that never happens in my world. But the Zerba Cellars 100% Syrah Port was really, really good. It just didn’t taste like port does normally, at least to me. It was high in alcohol (18%) like ports normally are but it just wasn’t overpowering or cloyingly sweet like most of them. And the winery brought a bowl of chocolates for us to enjoy with the port. Anything less would have offended us spoiled wine bitches, though, right?
